About Hypnotherapy

What is the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis means being in an altered and relaxed state of mind. We do this naturally throughout different periods of the day such as when driving on a familiar journey, reading a book, watching television or simply gazing at something.

Hypnotherapy refers to the therapy work that is done with a client whilst they are in hypnosis. This allows for changes at the unconscious level.

Why should I try hypnotherapy?

Often people want to make changes but for some reason something beyond their control stops them. This conflict occurs when the conscious mind wants something but the unconscious mind wants the opposite of this. With hypnotherapy we can communicate with the unconscious mind and this can help make the desired changes.

What will it feel like to be in trance or ‘hypnotized’?

It will feel like being totally relaxed, almost like the sensation when you are just about to ‘drop off ‘ to go to sleep but are still aware that you haven’t quite nodded off yet.  Some people experience a comfortable numbness/weightlessness in their arms or legs as they become more and more relaxed.

Will I end up being ‘zonked out’ or falling asleep?

No, you will just be totally relaxed but not asleep. If you monitored brain waves whilst a person is awake then you would see very rapid brain wave patterns. When resting the patterns are less rapid and more relaxed and when a person is asleep the waves are even more flatter. Hypnotherapy is most effective when relaxed but not asleep; although many people do successfully make changes even though they may have drifted in / out of sleep.

Can you take control of my mind just by saying a few words to me?

No. All hypnosis is self hypnosis which means that you have to be willing to relax and go into trance and work together with me as a hypnotherapist to move you forward and make the changes you want at a subconscious level.

I don’t know if I can be hypnotized?

As mentioned above all hypnosis is self hypnosis and the process of going into trance depends on the individual and therefore some will go into trance quicker than others and some will go into lighter trances whilst others go into deeper trances. Hypnotherapy is effective whether you go into a light or deeper trance.

How long is a session?

All sessions are approximately one hour long. If I feel a session would benefit from a little more time to deal with something then I allow up to an hour and half (without extra charge).

How do your sessions differ from other hypnotherapists?

I am a Practitioner of NLP, Coaching and Time Line TherapyTM and these are effective techniques to use in conjunction with hypnosis.

How many sessions would I need?

If you are opting for Virtual Hypnotic Gastric Band you will need 4 sessions and can have optional follow-up appointments to help keep you on track (every 6-8 weeks).

The Weight Loss/Reduction Program consists of 8 sessions with optional follow ups every 6 – 8 weeks.

Stop Smoking sessions consist of two sessions but if you wish to stop smoking straight away you can book both sessions together so that you stop after one long  2-3 hour session . Some people may require more time than this, this is entirely dependent on the amount of unconscious resistence held and working through these issues to successfully become a non-smoker.

All other sessions vary for everybody as some people may require just one session whilst others may require a series of sessions; it really depends on what issues come up within the session and how quickly your unconscious mind takes on the suggested changes to get your desired result. On average clients usually need between one and six sessions to make the changes they want.

Is there any guarantee that hypnosis will work for me?

As with any therapy there is no 100% guarantee which is why I teach clients simple techniques that they can use themselves to strengthen their ability to change. I also offer bespoke hypnosis CDs so that clients can listen regularly to the positive suggestions in the comfort of their own home.  This repitition strengthens the positive messages for change at the unconscious level.
